Children's Programs

Children benefit strongly from joining Martial Arts training early in their life. Training builds self confidence, improves coordination and increases the ability to concentrate. It also teaches children respect towards their training partner. Children will be prepared better in body and mind for their whole life. MATS offers JUDO and AIKIDO classes for children. When children turn 13 they can also start in the JUJITSU Adult program. All classes are taught by experienced Instructors.

Which Discipline is right for my Child?

  Judo Aikido
Starting Age 5+ years 8+ years
Philosophy Judo is an Olympic sport that teaches the use of balance, leverage, and movement to throw an opponent.   Aikido is a nonviolent Japanese martial art that teaches self-defense with the goal to  convert the energy of any attack in a circular motion against the attacker himself.
Philosophy Judo is ideal for active children that already have or want to develop a sense for competition. In the training we focus on throwing, falling and rolling as well as pinning techniques to give the children the toolkit to be successful in a tournament environment. Participation in tournaments is optional but encouraged.   Aikido is for the child that has or wants to develop physical coordination and agility. Attention to detail, a growing attention span and focus are other characteristics emphasized in training. In the training we work on throwing, falling and rolling which is completed by training in the traditional Samurai weapons, sword and staff.
Philosophy Children have a predefined curriculum which they will follow as they progress in skill. Ranks are awarded through official tests and children are rewarded with belts of different colors. Participation in tournaments is taken into consideration during testing.   Progression and testing is based on the hours participated in training. Children follow a predefined curriculum as they progress in rank and skill. Ranks are awarded through official tests and children are rewarded with belts of different colors.
Philosophy Between the age of 12 and 14 (size and weight as criteria) children join the adult program to either continue in their Judo career or switch to Jujitsu as discipline which fully builds on the concepts and techniques taught in the children’s Judo program. Belt progression will be carried over and they continue to work towards their black belt. Depending on their size and weight, children will join the adults program between 12-14 years of age. They will be phased into the adult ranks based on their skill and prior training and continue to work towards their black belt rank. For committed students there exists also the option to join the Uchi-Deshi Program.
