Self-defense Programs


The Martial Arts Training Service offers quarterly Women’s Self defense classes, either at MATS or through the Naperville Park District.

Self-defense instruction for:

Real estate professionals

MATS offers a specialized course combining Maureen Browne’s expertise as a self-defense instructor with her and John Gussman’s professional real estate experience. The real estate professionals self-defense classes can be custom designed to address the needs of an individual or office. Private and corporate classes are available. A three-hour seminar that teaches basic self-defense skills: escaping from grabs, holds and chokes, striking, kicking and blocking. The dynamics of sexual assault are also discussed.


Mother/daughter Self-defense: A two-hour intro to self-defense for mothers and their daughters ages 13 to 16 years. Basic self-defense and safety strategies are taught.

College-bound students

This two-hour program is specifically for girls 17 to 18 years-old who are preparing to leave for college. The dynamics of date rape are discussed in addition to safety concerns relevant to the college campus experience. Physical skills include escaping from grabs, holds and chokes, striking, kicking and blocking.


The Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ICASA) is a not-for-profit corporation of 33 community-based sexual assault crisis centers working together to end sexual violence. Each center provides 24-hour crisis intervention services, counseling and advocacy for victims of sexual assault and their significant others. Each center presents prevention education programs in Illinois communities.
